Description

I don't know if its mentioned below, so I going to add this: When I started Nicodemus, by BJD Gargoyle, I didn't have any BJDs at the time. So my only reference for jointing were pictures I began finding on the internet. I wasn't until 3 months later that I actually SAW a BJD in person for the first time. And it wasn't until 7-7 1/2 months after I started Nicodemus that I got my first BJD!

Edit: Oh, just so you BJD people know, he's not strung in ANYWAY here. He's nothing but clay, soft clay, CAREFULLY proped together. Don't ask my how his legs are not falling over.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I have "officially" named him Nicodemus. Yes, Nicodemus. I've always LOVED that name, it just so interesting!!!

Edit: I just wanted to add that there is something about this picture that I absolutely LOVE!!! I don't know what it is...... He just looks so smexy when put together and at this angle.

Here's another update for the male gargoyle BJD I'm sculpting. Here's what his body looks like "ruffly" assembled.

Incase people are wondering, he's about 80cm if he were to stand(31.5 in) and is sculpted with chavant clay. Yeah, I know, he's a BIG boy.

And I do at some time plan to make a female one too, but that'll probably come after I make my mom her FFXII Fran doll.

I forgot to mention that this pic is somewhat outdated and that the bend in his torso has been moved from the middle of his abdomen/stomach to right below his pectoral/chest muscles.

Edit: This is for :iconkatfrog08:, who wanted to know pretty much EVERYTHING that is going into making Nicodemus, my Gargoyle BJD.

Who: Ahhhhh....... Me?! ShinigamiDuoLover(a.k.a. Angela). I have named my "BJD" Nicodemus. I've always LOVED this name after seeing "The Secert of NIMH" as a child.

What: A Ball Jointed Doll sculpture. It is made out of Chavant clay. The Chavant I use does not air dry, but it cannot be baked either..... Which I am kind of regretting right now because I want to cast him into resin later. But for right now the Chavant is working. I used the Chavant because I like working with it better than Sculpey.

When: Lets see, when did I start this project............? Um, according to my Photoshop file, I started this on or around April 29th, 2009. I say my Photoshop file because I used a sketch I did in Photoshop to help reference anatomy and size of his body. When do I plan to have him finished? My goal is to have him finished sculpte AND cast in resin before the end of the year. I even have my eyes on some stuff for rubber molds and the resin I want, but I'll save all that for another deviation.

Where: Where am I sculpting this? Ahhhhhhh, my room, which is located in San Diego, CA. Nicodemus here has taken over my desk area, as well as a small craft table that happens to be the SAME exact height as the pull out section for my keyboard............. which I don't really use anyways because I have a laptop.

How: How did I sculpt him?! How does any sculptor sculpt their..... sculpture? Lol, tounge twister. I attended the Art Institute of California - San Diego. I have a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Media Arts in Animation. I'm telling you all this because my background covers animation, and I took TWO Sculpting for Animation classes, which is where I learned to sculpt from.
How am I sculpting Nicodemus? First I did a sketch to figure out how I wanted his anatomy to look. The sketch can be seen here: [link] . I made the sketch so I could print it out in pieces and glue the pieces together so I would have an accurate, to size, reference of my doll. I then took styrofoam(however you spell it) and shaped it to the size of my doll, except that I left about an inch around all the areas of his body so I could apply the clay. This saved me money on clay. When I start sculpting, I pretty much just sculpt out the basic form and then add the detail later.

And Why: This wasn't in the information request, but I thought I'd throw it in here anyways. I started sculpting Nicodemus, my Gargoyle BJD, because I could not afford my own BJD(still can't) and thought it would be cheaper to make one rather than buy one. So far, that is very true. Why a Gargoyle? I was really inspired by the BJD website, SOOM! OMG.... I. LOVE. SOOM. They have so many beautiful anthro dolls! And SOOM is pretty much the only BJD website that offers LARGE anthro type dolls, besides SOULDOLL'S centaur Chrion, which I also want. But the anthro dolls are so interesting and beautiful. I figured if I make a doll that is REALLY different, then other people would want to buy him, allowing me to earn money to buy other BJDs.

Hope that all makes sense and that you enjoyed it! I really hope you did, because it took a good deal of time to write this up! Lol, just kidding. Wait, did you really make it this far?! 0_o Wow, kuddos to you!
